Elasticsearch Fails to Start after vIDM Upgrade

March 8, 2021 0 By Allan Kjaer

I have just been doing a upgrade of VMware Identity Manager (vIDM) 3.3.3 to 3.3.4 from the vRealize Suite Life Cycle Manager (vRSLCM) 8.3.

After the upgrade the vIDM appliance from vRSLCM it failed after a long wait, looking at the vIDM machine i could see that the Elasticsearch service did not run.

After reverting the snapshot, i monitored the upgrade in the console and could see that the if was waiting for the Elasticsearch to start for around 13 minuts.

I found that the “root” user password was expired, so i got that reset, and tried again, but this gave the same problem.

After some internet searching and digging around i found that there is another user on the appliance that is used, that also has an expired password: “sshuser”.

I tried again this time with both password reset, and now i could do the upgrade.

The problem lies in the fact that the upgrade changes the expire for password to the default value, and that can make the password expired if you have change the password expire for this account, and the password age has passed the default expire age that is 60 days.

Hope VMware will add a check in the vRSLCM upgrade for the vIDM and other products, where this will course problems during the upgrade, and come with error or warning.
